Floppy Handle on Your UPVC Door? Here's What It Usually Means

Belfast locksmith The Lock Ninja explains the most common UPVC door faults, from floppy handles to keys that won't turn, and why getting them looked at early can save homeowners from a lockout or a bigger repair bill.

UPVC doors are everywhere in Northern Ireland, and most of the time they just work. When they don't, the signs are usually there well before the door fails completely. Here are the faults we see most often and what's normally behind them.

The handle has gone floppy or won't lift

This is the classic sign of a failed gearbox. The gearbox sits in the middle of the multipoint lock and links the handle and key to the locking points. When it breaks, the handle loses resistance. In many cases the gearbox can be replaced on its own without replacing the full mechanism.

The key turns but the door won't lock

This can be a broken gearbox, a worn cylinder, or a door that has dropped out of line so the locking points no longer meet the keeps. Forcing the key or handle often makes things worse.

The door is stiff or catches when closing

Doors drop over time, especially heavy composite doors. Adjusting the hinges and keeps realigns the door and takes the strain off the lock. Leaving it often leads to a broken mechanism later.

The key is stiff or sticks

A worn or dirty euro cylinder is the usual cause. Replacing it, ideally with an anti-snap cylinder, sorts the problem and improves security at the same time.

The door is stuck locked

If a mechanism fails while the door is locked, it can't be opened normally. A trained locksmith can usually gain entry without damaging the door and repair the fault in the same visit.

"A lot of the emergency call-outs we do could have been a simple repair a few weeks earlier," says David of The Lock Ninja Locksmiths Belfast. "If your door starts acting up, don't wait for it to lock you out."
