Just Moved Home in Belfast? Why Changing the Locks Should Be Your First Job
Award-winning Belfast locksmith The Lock Ninja shares a simple security checklist for new homeowners and tenants, starting with the step most people forget: changing the locks.
Moving home comes with a long to-do list, and security often gets pushed down it. But one job should be near the top: changing the locks.
You don't know who has a key
Previous owners, former tenants, neighbours, cleaners, family members and tradespeople may all have been given keys over the years. Most people would never think about who still has one. Changing or rekeying your locks means you're the only one with access.
A simple first-week checklist
- Change or rekey every external door lock
- Check whether your cylinders are anti-snap rated (look for TS007 3-star or SS312 Diamond markings)
- Test every window lock and handle
- Make sure UPVC doors lock fully when you lift the handle and turn the key
- Check side gates, garages and sheds
- Count your keys and keep a spare somewhere safe, never under a mat or plant pot
It's quicker than you'd think
On most homes, all the external locks can be changed or upgraded in a single visit. It's also the perfect time to upgrade to anti-snap cylinders if your current ones aren't rated.
"Changing the locks is the cheapest peace of mind you'll buy when you move," says David of The Lock Ninja Locksmiths Belfast. "We can usually do the whole house in one visit."
