Is Your Powder Flowing Properly? Find Out with the REVOLUTION Powder Analyser
Powder flow problems can disrupt production, cause inconsistent product quality and increase waste. Even when a powder meets its particle size specification, it may still behave unpredictably during blending, mixing, tableting, storage or transport. So how can you understand what your powder will do during processing?
The REVOLUTION Powder Analyser from Mercury Scientific, available in the UK through Meritics, helps you look beyond particle size to measure how powders actually behave in motion.
Turn Powder Behaviour into Measurable Data
The REVOLUTION uses a rotating drum and machine-vision camera to capture images as the powder moves. Its software analyses these images automatically, measuring parameters such as avalanche energy, angle, density and surface fractal. This gives you quantitative data to compare materials, investigate inconsistencies and support process optimisation.
The instrument can assess a powder’s ability to flow, consolidate, granulate, cake, pack and fluidise. With drum options for sample volumes from around 10 to 500 cc, it supports a wide range of powder applications.
Evidence That Makes a Difference
Research by Armor Pharma explored the flow behaviour of different lactose grades using the REVOLUTION. The study found differences between granulated, spray-dried, sieved and milled lactose. Granulated and spray-dried grades showed low break energy and surface fractal values close to 2, while milled grades showed higher break energy and fractal values above 5. These differences helped distinguish powder behaviours relevant to tablet manufacture.
The technology has also demonstrated its value for metal additive manufacturing. Meritics’ application data comparing virgin, used and blended 316L stainless steel powders showed measurable differences in avalanche energy, helping distinguish powder conditions.
Make Better-Informed Powder Decisions
Whether you manufacture pharmaceuticals, process chemicals or work with advanced materials, the REVOLUTION Powder Analyser can help you understand powder behaviour and make more informed decisions about processing and quality.
