On-Site Fabrication
Every Carpenter Oak frame begins in our workshops, where traditional craft and careful attention to detail meet modern precision. For almost 40 years, we’ve been shaping timber into homes that feel warm, grounded, and full of character. Our fabrication process is where your vision becomes something real - carved, cut, shaped, and refined by skilled hands.
Keeping fabrication entirely in-house allows us to maintain accuracy and consistency at a level that external suppliers simply can’t match. From the first cut to the final quality check, every component is crafted and verified under one roof. This approach reduces risk dramatically, particularly on projects where tolerances, sequencing or interfaces with glazing and steelwork are critical.
All workshop activity is closely aligned with our design and engineering teams, allowing rapid communication and immediate problem-solving if a detail needs adjusting. This avoids delays and prevents costly rework further down the line. With no outsourced production, the supply chain is shorter, more resilient and easier to control - giving contractors and consultants complete confidence in the process.

Homes
What does “home” look like to you?
Perhaps it’s a cosy farmhouse kitchen warmed by a log burner, with a door leading into a garden and wide countryside views.
Or maybe it’s a contemporary, light-filled urban space with clean Scandinavian design.
It could even be a combination — classic charm paired with spacious, modern open-plan living.
At Carpenter Oak, we create homes that are shaped by the individuality of our clients and the character of the landscape around them.
Our visible timber frames introduce natural warmth and enduring craftsmanship to any design. With thoughtful planning and material selection, we can craft a home in virtually any architectural style.
Extensions
Create a Standout Space in Your Home
You might already love your home — it just needs that extra room or a truly memorable feature.
Perhaps you’re dreaming of a bright, characterful kitchen-dining space that becomes the heart of family life.
Maybe you’re replacing an outdated extension or conservatory with something beautifully crafted and built to last.
Or you may be planning a larger addition that significantly increases both space and property value.
At Carpenter Oak, every extension is an exciting opportunity — from compact garden rooms to bold, expansive additions.
Timber framing works especially well for single-storey extensions, where exposed trusses and vaulted ceilings add height, light, and visual drama. We frequently design single-storey wings for new homes too, bringing the warmth of an oak roof structure into everyday living spaces.

Annexes & Outbuildings
Adding Space Without Extending Your Home
There are many ways to increase your living space without building a traditional extension.
In some cases, an extension works well, but a detached annexe or outbuilding can offer a practical alternative — providing substantial new space while remaining private and separate from your main home.
Every client’s needs are unique, and one solution doesn’t fit all.
At Carpenter Oak, we design and construct a wide range of annexes and outbuildings, tailored in scale, style, and function to suit each project.
Our buildings are usually created from prefabricated components assembled onsite, rather than fully factory-built cabins. This approach allows us to deliver larger, robust structures that match the quality and solidity of your home.
Garden Rooms
Sunrooms, Orangeries, & Conservatories
Our oak-framed garden rooms fill your home with natural light and offer stunning views, creating a seamless connection between indoor living and the outdoors. Designed for year-round comfort, they stay warm in winter and cool in summer, all within a beautifully crafted oak structure.
Glazing, Windows & Doors
Glazing Systems
Timber-framed buildings are naturally energy-efficient and comfortable, and carefully considered glazing can enhance natural light while framing spectacular views. With 35 years of experience, we seamlessly integrate glazing into timber structures, providing precision joinery for all fittings and fixtures.
Glazing timber presents unique challenges because green oak naturally moves, shrinks, twists, and splits over time. Our skilled carpenters ensure beautiful, durable results despite these changes.
Standard oak window frames are available with double or triple glazing, while bespoke options for windows, doors, and panels can be tailored to suit your design and budget. We also offer solutions to manage solar gain and reduce glare.
Clients often praise our “frameless” style windows, which maximise views and bring the outdoors inside. Glazing can be full-height, sit on dwarf walls, or follow gables, creating light-filled, airy interiors that showcase the surroundings.
Modern oak-framed homes are often more efficient and comfortable than older houses, frequently exceeding current building regulations.
Specialist Glazing, Seamlessly Integrated
Bespoke glazing solutions, designed to work in harmony with complex timber frames, are a key part of any timber-framed project.

Roof Boarding for Timber Frames
Roof Boarding for Timber Frames
Our roof boarding service is specifically designed to complement our timber framing solutions, providing essential weatherproof protection that enhances the durability and efficiency of your build. By installing high-quality roof boarding, we create an immediate protective cover, allowing the drying process to begin as soon as the oak frame is erected. This enables the next phase of construction to proceed without delays, regardless of weather conditions.
Our precision-cut roof boarding is installed tightly against the timber frame, leaving only a minimal gap to ensure a seamless, integrated appearance. This not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also maintains the structural integrity of the green oak frame, ensuring long-term stability and weather resistance.
Our expert team ensures a high-quality installation, tailored to your project’s specifications, using premium sustainably sourced timber. Whether you are constructing a traditional oak-framed building or a modern timber structure, our roof boarding solutions provide the ideal foundation for a durable and efficient build.

Encapsulation Systems
Wrapping Your Timber Frame
Encapsulation systems, often described as a ‘wrap’ for the structural skeleton of our large-section timber frames, play a crucial role in the long-term energy performance of a building.
Once the wrap is installed and windows and doors are fitted, it creates a weathertight, secure shell, protecting the interior from weather and allowing materials to be safely stored inside. This shell also enables the majority of interior work to proceed, often alongside external cladding, helping to speed up the build process and reduce pressure on completing the external walls and roof.
Achieving a wind- and watertight structure is also important for financing a self-build. Many mortgage lenders will release funds once this stage is reached. Key self-build milestones typically include:
Land acquisition (with at least outline planning permission)
Substructure completion
Wallplate/eaves height (just before roof trusses are added)
Wind- and watertight roof with tiles
First fix
Second fix
Certified completion
While Carpenter Oak does not manufacture encapsulation systems, we partner with carefully selected suppliers to provide a range of options for wrapping your frame. Each system has its advantages, and we can help you choose the one that best suits your project.
With extensive experience integrating panels and timber frame design, we ensure a cohesive, energy-efficient build. We focus on low-energy homes, aiming for many of our new builds to be net energy exporters.
With nearly 40 years of expertise, we can support projects of all sizes and complexities, including helping self-builders reach Stage 4 of a self-build mortgage when required.

How We Approach Craft:
Our mission is to create beautifully considered structures built to last generations. Every project is shaped by expert carpenters and designers with decades of combined experience. We respect traditional timber framing techniques while integrating modern engineering, contemporary architectural requirements, and sustainable practices - balancing heritage and innovation in every frame we deliver.
Timber Selection & Environmental Ethos
Drawing on nearly four decades of specialist knowledge, we select timber with exceptional care. We partner with long-trusted European sawmills - particularly in northern France - to source premium, FSC-certified oak, graded twice before carving. We also champion locally grown Scottish timbers, including Douglas fir and larch, sourced from responsibly managed forests and, in some cases, directly from clients’ own land.
Sustainability sits at the core of our approach - from low-impact extraction and local processing to the use of pure traditional joints that celebrate the natural character and integrity of the material. Our methods support responsible forestry, reduce environmental impact, and honour the craft at the heart of every frame we create.

We provide early-stage design consultancy, technical advice, and CPD programmes for architects and engineers, supporting collaboration from concept through completion.
