Such over-pressurisation can occur if temperature or pressure controls fail. These valves are specifically engineered to be installed at the upper section of a hot water cylinder, where the highest temperatures in the system are typically found. When the temperature exceeds 95°C, the wax mixture within the temperature probe element expands, lifting the valve off its seat and allowing water to escape, thereby relieving pressure within the cylinder. Additionally, the valve remains closed in the event of rising water pressure without a corresponding temperature increase. It will only open once the pre-set pressure threshold of the relief mechanism is reached, effectively releasing any excess pressure.
