Blackwood Plant Hire unearths New 56-Tonne Step Frame

13 June 2012

A Kilmarnock-based plant hire company has taken delivery of an Andover Trailers tri-axle step frame, with low profile neck and beavertail.

The 12.5 metre long trailer is being used by Blackwood Plant Hire across theUK, carrying 30-tonne excavators on behalf of renewable energy firms tasked with constructing wind farms.

The purpose-built SFCL 56 is based at the company’s premises in Stewarton and will also transport machinery for contractors refurbishing petrol stations.

Tom Blackwood, owner of Blackwood Plant Hire, says: “Andover Trailers always provide a good, strong trailer which is well-built; you rarely experience any problems with what they deliver.

“With this design, we requested that the frame’s bogie be moved forward by about a metre, for increased manoeuvrability. We’ll be navigating particularly tight gateways while on the job, so shortening the wheelbase was vital.”

Featuring grouser bars on the beavertail, the SFCL 56 is fitted with BPW air suspension with manual raise and lower valves and a Wabco electronic braking system (EBS).

The trailer comes with hydraulic fold-forward ramps and top deck ramps, LED lighting as well as silver and red conspicuity markings on the sides and rear.

Blackwood adds: “We’ve also requested hydraulic steady legs, which our drivers find to be a great help. It saves the drivers time as they don’t have to manually lower each leg individually – it’s a nice, safe and user-friendly feature.”

Established in 1960, Blackwood Plant Hire offers a fleet of over 120 excavators and machinery to customers across the UK. The company supplies plant to major contractors including Balfour Beatty Land Engineering, Raynesway Construction, Carillion Civil Engineering and are now ‘Link Up Approved’ to meet the requirements of Network Rail.

Further to the new SFCL 56, the haulier is already running an Andover Trailers step frame and plant body, with a further 40-tonne step frame and 32-tonne plant body on order. The latest addition to the fleet will operate with a brand-new Scania 6x2 tractor unit, with both truck and trailer finished in blue and white paintwork.
