Addagrip Addaset wins sky-high praise at Kew

Addagrips' resin bound surface Addaset has been used to provide a durable, anti-slip surface for the new Rhizotron and Xstrata treetop walkway at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew.
The walkway consists of the Rhizotron underground passage and 200 metre Xstrata walkway 18 metres above ground that offers visitors views of the 300 acres of Kew and London skyline from the tree canopy.
Total Protection laid a total of 449m² of 6mm All Gold Addaset to a depth of 15mm for the surfacing of the Rhizotron and plaza area around the aerial walkway, as well as the anti-slip ramp system and DDA complient access paths.
Lead consultants for the project, Marks Barfield Architects, specified Addaset for the surfaces after previous success of Addaset on the paths connecting the Alpine House with the rock garden at Kew.
Chris Smiles, Associate of Marks Barfield Architects explained, “The material used needed to be high quality, durable and also work with the other pathways around the gardens. Addaset is a practical, slip-resistant surface and is wheelchair friendly, making it suitable for ramps. The porous resin surface also met the high level of drainage requirements for the site.”
Proposals for the permanent attraction, located deep within the gardens in the historic Capability Brown woodland between the Evolution House and the lake, came after the success of a temporary walkway build for the summer festivals in 2002 and 2003. Marks Barfield Architects were invited to be lead consultants for the project due to their previous experience with projects such as the London Eye.
Addaset provides a smooth, slightly textured homogenous surface by binding together natural aggregate within a clear resin which is attractive, safe, low maintenance and hard wearing. It is a cold applied surface that offers a wide choice of aggregates that can be chosen to harmonise with the local surroundings making it ideal for use on historic sites and heritage restoration projects.
