Weiss Gallenkamp install major Plant Growth Research Facility

24 September 2007

This project was the design and build of new Headquarters and Laboratories of the Scottish Agricultural Science Agency (SASA).

Weiss Gallenkamp were asked to advise the architect and Services Consultants at a pre-tender stage as to the type of requirements a Controlled Environment would require.

The contract was to be awarded to a Main Contractor who was to choose and specify which main subcontractors would be used for the various specialist works. Five main contracting companies were approached and Weiss Gallenkamp were asked to tender for the Controlled Environment rooms by all five, so Weiss Gallenkamp pitched to all five to demonstrate our ability to provide a suitable solution to each.

Weiss Gallenkamp were contracted to supply the consultation, design and manufacture of controlled environment facilities, constituting the design, build and installation of 31 bespoke controlled environment rooms of 25 different types and 6 drying cabinets.

Forming a key element of the new Seeds and Laboratory Wing, Weiss Gallenkamp provided controlled environments for plant growth, seed storage, soil storage, nematode preparation and both long and short term storage for plant material.

Weiss Gallenkamp provided:

• Project management
• On-site installation management
• Commissioning
• Integration into local BMS and other facilities
• Installation
• Training of customer's own operating & service personnel
• Full user/client co-ordination

In order to ensure a smooth operation Weiss Gallenkamp had a full time Site Manager permanently on site from July 2005 through to completion and beyond, which contributed to the rooms being completed and accepted on time. As part of the services offered by Weiss Gallenkamp, post order advice was offered to the client to save energy costs in certain areas. This advice was accepted after Weiss Gallenkamp demonstrated the savings by providing supporting calculations.

Supporting documentation was then provided to prove the equipment specification, following testing and commissioning on site by Weiss Gallenkamp staff.

Types of rooms supplied include:

• Plant Growth rooms
• Multi-tier lit shelving tissue rooms
• Incubator rooms
• Cold store rooms
• Quarantine room for insects
• Freezer room (-20°C)
• Copenhagen tank room with temperature control
• Fixed and adjustable height shelving types
• Storage Rooms (long & short term) with library type mobile racking
• Soil drying cabinets

Completion of the project at SASA confirmed Weiss Gallenkamp's position as the leading provider of controlled environment technology to the scientific community and demonstrates our ability to work with major construction companies to deliver crucial specialist elements within broader projects.
