Automated Container Unloading and Palletising at Distribution Centre

Asda turned to Granta Automation to automate the unloading and palletising of shipping containers at its Teesport general merchandise distribution centre, removing a heavy manual task from the operation.

Asda, one of the UK's largest supermarket chains, needed a better way to handle the unloading of shipping containers arriving at its Teesport general merchandise distribution centre - a task that had traditionally relied on manual labour to unload and stack goods ready for onward distribution.

Working with Granta Automation, Asda implemented a system combining automated container de-stuffing with robotic palletising, removing a large amount of manual handling from the process. Rather than staff manually lifting goods out of containers and building pallets by hand, the automated system takes on that repetitive and physically demanding work.

Feedback from the Asda team has highlighted the ongoing support provided throughout the project as a particular strength of working with Granta, alongside the practical improvement the system has made to how containers are processed at the site.

Projects like this show how automated container unloading can benefit not just manufacturers but major retail and distribution operations handling very high volumes of mixed goods. Granta Automation designs and installs automated container unloading and palletising systems for distribution centres across the UK. Visit our website and contact us to find out more.
