ADR Driver Training: How UK Drivers Qualify to Carry Dangerous Goods

Drivers who carry dangerous goods by road may need an ADR driver qualification in addition to the licence entitlement for the vehicle. The training route is designed around the type of dangerous goods and the way they will be transported.

The ADR qualification route

GOV.UK states that a new ADR driver must take training and pass the relevant exams before receiving an ADR card. The driver must have the card before driving dangerous goods within the scope of the qualification.

Training is not identical for every driver. Additional modules are selected according to the dangerous goods the person needs to carry. The official categories include explosives, gases, flammable liquids, flammable solids, oxidising substances, toxic substances, radioactive substances, corrosive substances and miscellaneous substances.

The ADR card records the goods the holder is permitted to carry. Extra classes can be added later by completing the relevant optional training and tests, so drivers should identify likely work requirements before selecting a course.

Renewal and related qualifications

ADR qualifications last for five years. Drivers must complete refresher training and pass the required exams to stay qualified. Waiting until the end of the validity period can create avoidable pressure, so the expiry date should be monitored and renewal planned in good time.

ADR does not replace the underlying vehicle qualification. A person transporting dangerous goods in an HGV as the main part of their job also needs the appropriate HGV driving entitlement and Driver CPC. GOV.UK also states that drivers who need access to fuel terminals where petroleum products are loaded into tankers require a Petroleum Driver Passport.
