Tarkett provides holistic treatment for Newton Abbott Hospital

23 January 2009

The new £25m community hospital for Newton Abbott features over 7000m2 of Tarkett floorcoverings.

The installation included areas of Veneto xf linoleum throughout all circulation areas, wards and rooms, together with other specialist products in wet areas, operating theatres and the gym. The new hospital includes a maternity unit, paediatric therapy unit and outpatient facilities amongst its many services, and will open early in 2009.

Tony Miller of Rydon Construction, who carried out the new build, explains the choice of flooring: “We wanted to use a linoleum product for its green credentials and better feel. Having worked with Tarkett for a number of years, we chose their Veneto xf range as it greatly enhances the look of the building, giving warmth underfoot and a more homely, welcoming appearance.”

Veneto xf has excellent environmental credentials being made of natural, renewable materials such as linseed oil, jute, resin, wood and cork flour. The xf surface treatment gives the flooring an extremely strong surface toughness and excellent resistance to abrasions, stains and chemicals. No initial wax or polish is needed and maintenance costs can be reduced by up to 30% since Veneto xf is much easier to clean than untreated linoleum. Water, energy and detergent consumption is also reduced by up to 50%, giving Veneto xf an exceptional overall lifecycle cost.

Tarkett’s Granit Multisafe is a specialist floorcovering for wet areas, designed for better safety underfoot, which is why it was chosen for the showers in the new hospital. Its construction provides a good grip for feet even when the floor is slippery with soap and water, while the dense, impermeable surface and well-rounded studs mean it is also hygienic and easy to clean.

Granit Multisafe is suited to barefoot areas, so for other rooms requiring enhanced slip resistance, such as toilets and utility areas, Tarkett’s Safetred Dimension safety flooring was used. With an R10 slip resistance rating, Safetred Dimension gives excellent slip resistance both wet and dry, and is available in a range of attractive colours so there is no compromise on design or performance.

Operating theatres are a particularly sensitive environment where hygiene and static control properties are vital, so Tarkett’s Toro SC floorcoverings were chosen. This homogenous vinyl flooring offers advanced static conductive properties combined with outstanding maintenance characteristics.

The new hospital also features a rehabilitation unit with a new gym. In order to aid with patients’ recovery, this has been fitted with a specialist sports floor from Tarkett’s Omnisports range. This PVC sports floorcovering deforms at the point of impact to offer maximum protection and safety when engaged in physical activity.
