Cranage EMC Demonstrates How PLC Systems Can Achieve EN 61000-6-2 Compliance and Greater Operational Reliability

Electronic control systems are only as reliable as their ability to withstand real-world electromagnetic interference. Cranage EMC’s latest PLC compliance project highlights how targeted EMC engineering solutions helped overcome Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) issues, achieve EN 61000-6-2 compliance and improve operational resilience in an industrial environment.

A recent project undertaken by Cranage EMC revealed the significant impact Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) can have on PLC-controlled manufacturing systems. During EMC immunity testing to EN 61000-6-2 requirements, static discharge events caused communication corruption, process interruptions and system resets that prevented the equipment from meeting the required performance criteria.

Detailed investigation identified weaknesses including insufficient grounding across cabinet panels and a lack of dedicated ESD protection on a critical communication interface. These issues increased the vulnerability of the PLC system to high-current discharge events capable of disrupting sensitive electronics and manufacturing processes.

Working closely with the client, Cranage EMC supported the implementation of practical corrective measures designed to improve electromagnetic resilience. Additional grounding straps were installed on selected metal panelwork, while Transient Voltage Suppression (TVS) protection diodes were added between communication interfaces and process sensors to reduce the impact of electrical transients.

The results were immediate and measurable. Following the improvements, the system successfully achieved the EMC performance criteria specified by EN 61000-6-2 for industrial applications. The enhanced protection also reduced the risk of costly production downtime, improved operational efficiency and increased overall system reliability.

This project demonstrates why EMC testing, ESD protection and effective grounding strategies remain essential for modern PLC systems operating in demanding industrial environments. By identifying vulnerabilities before equipment is deployed, Cranage EMC helps manufacturers minimise risk, protect productivity and ensure long-term compliance with critical EMC standards.
