SDS - Slag Detection System | Application-Specific Thermal Imaging Solution

SDS - Slag Detection System | Application-Specific Thermal Imaging Solution

The LAND Slag Detection System (SDS) delivers improved yields, higher-quality steel and reduces costly downstream processing. There are additional benefits in reduced ladle refractory wear.

At the end of the tap the levels of slag and steel rapidly reverse. Quick termination of the tap after the alarm has been triggered is necessary to prevent excessive levels of slag in the ladle.

SDS uses a high-resolution thermal imaging camera to detect the transition between steel and slag. The dedicated thermal imaging camera has been specifically designed to survive in the harsh operating conditions and utilizes a particular wavelength to reduce obscuration caused by smoke and fume. Data is presented to the operator in real time enabling them to make informed decisions about the tapping process and the system provides clear alarm notifications.

Gold Cup Reference Pyrometer | Portable Reference Pyrometer

Gold Cup Reference Pyrometer | Portable Reference Pyrometer

LAND’s unique reference pyrometer designed specifically for temperature measurements on the surface of reformer tubes.

As the only instrument that can provide a repeatable, reliable temperature for reformer tubes, Gold Cup eliminates inherent errors that affect other infrared devices. This makes it ideal for checking and correcting other measurement devices.

Information from this device can be used to modify portable thermal imagers and infrared thermometers, ensuring that their non-contact measurements are more accurate, leading to increased tube life and a greater product yield.

A hemispherical reflector produces a measurement area which is emissivity independent – ideal for tubes of unknown emissivity. The reflector edge prevents reflected radiation entering the area, producing black body conditions measured by a silicon detector.

The Gold Cup thermometer is specifically designed for reformer tube furnace operators in the hydrocarbon processing industry, providing reference readings that enable the correction of non-contact temperature measurement instruments.

Modular Gold Cup Reference Pyrometer | Portable Reference Pyrometer

Modular Gold Cup Reference Pyrometer | Portable Reference Pyrometer

LAND’s unique modular reference pyrometer designed specifically for temperature measurements on the surface of tube furnaces

It has a highly reflective gold hemisphere which is held against the tube. This has two functions: it blocks any background radiation from hotter objects and enhances the effective emissivity of the tube. The gold coating traps the infrared energy emitted by the tube and effectively creates a black body cavity, with a small aperture through which the radiation can be measured. In these conditions, the emissivity is close to the theoretical maximum of 1.00. Black body condition combined with the lack of background radiation removes the two largest uncertainties in non-contact infrared temperature measurements. This technology has been tried and tested by LAND over many years.

The modular gold cup repackages this technology in a convenient new probe which has been designed in collaboration with industry experts. It allows the probe to be assembled into different configurations for different furnaces and it can be disassembled into a compact industrial case for easy shipping. The complete system weighs less than 32 kg so it can be transported on most commercial airlines.

Once assembled into the required configuration, the modular gold cup is connected to a cooling air supply and inserted through a port into the furnace. Additional cooling is applied once the probe has been removed from the furnace to allow a quicker cool down before taking the next reading.
