Danish construction project uses Noise Sentinel to take away the headache of noise monitoring

Noise management for inner-city building site

Construction company MVZ Byggepladsservice’s latest inner city development will have minimum noise impact on local residents and office workers, thanks to subscription-based monitoring service, Noise Sentinel. The Panum Institute Science Tower is a new building development for the University of Copenhagen medical centre. Located in the central Nørrebro district of Copenhagen, the construction is taking place in a densely built up area consisting of residential and office buildings, as well as noise-sensitive facilities such as a church, a hospital and the university itself. The contracted building company, MVZ Byggepladsservice had no experience in controlling their environmental noise and were further challenged when the Environmental Impact Study (EIS) specified that the average noise levels, during building, must not exceed 70 dB(A) during daytime and 55 dB(A) during the night. To overcome these issues, MVZ Byggepladsservice utilised Brüel & Kjær’s Noise Sentinel system, which provides round-the-clock noise monitoring on behalf of the project owner. This ensures construction activities remain within stated compliance limits, while community noise impact is minimised. The Noise Sentinel service is setup and maintained by Brüel & Kjær, so the subscriber only has to specify their monitoring requirements. Brüel & Kjær then supplies and installs the necessary Noise Monitoring Terminals (NMT). The user can access all noise data online, in real-time - and receive SMS messages and emails of important events. “Without Noise Sentinel, we wouldn’t have been able to bid for the infrastructure contract or would have had to skip the noise monitoring part, leaving the main contractor with an additional procurement headache. The Noise sentinel subscription meant neither we - nor the construction contractor - needed to get involved unless the limits were exceeded, leaving us free to focus on the main tasks and not on operating noise monitoring equipment,” said MVZ’s CEO, Tomas Zeltner. The Panum Institute Science Tower construction will cover 38,000 square metres and will house an international biomedical centre, research and laboratory facilities. Work commenced in August 2012 and is expected to be complete in early 2015 costing €180M.
