Livinghouse advice on planning a bathroom

15 April 2010

Livinghouse.co.uk offer advice on some funamental aspects of bathroom refurbishment.

Is this bathroom going to be a traditional style or a modern contemporary bathroom?

•    If your house is a thatched cottage or any house that is perceived to be old, it is only the very brave that decides an uber modern bathroom style is for them and the same could be said if you live in ultra modern house and you choose a traditional bathroom style. Having said this there is possibly a compromise that often works. If you choose say a modern style bathroom suite and then add a traditional style set of bathroom taps this is often considered to be a classical style bathroom, which is often deemed to be "Chic" and acceptable for both styles of home. Once you have some idea of the style you are after you can then move on to actually choosing your bathroom.  You may prefer to choose a complete matching bathroom suite or mix and match various elements to suit your style.

Below is a list of decisions that will need to be made.

Choosing a Bathroom Suite;
•    Toilet - Wall hung toilet, back to wall toilet, or toilet close coupled cistern.
•    Bidet - Wall hung bidet, back to wall bidet or whether even to have one.
•    Washbasin - wall hung washbasin, washbasin on a pedestal or counter top lay on washbasin

Choosing a Bath;
•    Freestanding Baths - A bath that is fitted away from the wall with space all around.
•    Built In Baths - Baths that are built into the bathroom, generally in the corner of the room.

Choosing a Shower Style;
•    Corner shower - Square or rectangle in shape this shower can be supplied with sliding, pivot or folding doors.
•    Quadrant shower - Corner shower with curved door entry can be supplied with pivot or sliding doors.
•    Recessed shower - A shower with 3 walls and a shower door to entry can be supplied with sliding, pivot or folding doors.
•    Shower above the bath - These showers tend to be space saving and are used in bathrooms where space is an issue.

Choosing Taps and Brassware;
•    Taps finish - taps are finished in chrome, gold, nickel, stainless steel and powder coated colour finishes.
•    Taps operation - Separate hot and cold taps or single monobloc mixing taps that mixes the hot and cold water together via a single lever.

Choosing a Floor Covering;
•    Stone Flooring - marble, limestone, travertine or granite.
•    Hardwood Flooring - Solid wood flooring, engineered wood flooring.
•    Porcelain Tiles - numerous styles and sizes.
•    Ceramic Flooring Tiles - numerous styles and sizes.
•    Vinyl Flooring - Vinyl tiles or vinyl sheet.

Choosing a Wall Covering;
•    Stone - marble, limestone, travertine or granite.
•    Porcelain Tiles - numerous styles and sizes.
•    Timber Wall Panelling - various widths of tongue and groove painted to various colours.

As you can see there are many decisions to be made. A lot of them will be made easier because you have already decided on an overall look and style - others could be trickier. It might be a good idea to trawl the internet, visit bathroom showrooms and buy bathroom and interior design magazines for ideas, making notes of what you like.
