OUR CLIENT
Shaw Education Trust is an expanding multi-academy trust sponsored by Shaw Trust. They oversee and manage academies across all educational phases, sectors, and communities.
THE BRIEFING
The Shaw Education Trust commenced a phased upgrade of the swimming pool at Blackfriars Academy. Collaborating closely with Shaw Education Trust, Ford Mainwaring was tasked with the removal of the outdated ventilation system serving the pool and the installation of a new Air Handling Unit (AHU), which includes a high-efficiency heat recovery system.
The project included the following elements:
- Removal of the existing inefficient ventilation system and decommissioning of obsolete systems.
- Installation and commissioning of a new Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) Air Handling Unit, complete with a control panel for automatic regulation of humidity and temperature in the pool area.
- New supply and extract air ductwork fitted with thermal insulation. The ductwork is designed with a treated lining suitable for the swimming pool environment and powder-coated white for improved aesthetics within the pool area.
- Our builders constructed a new concrete base and fencing compound for the new AHU, positioned at the rear of the pool building.
- Comprehensive commissioning of the AHU to meet design specifications and client requirements.

THE CLIENT
VIVO Defence Services operates within the Ministry of Defence (MOD), dedicated to supporting military infrastructure. THE BRIEFING
One of the two Hoval boilers and its accompanying components reached the end of its operational life and required replacement to prevent potential failure.
To ensure the success of this project, we were assigned the following tasks:
- Remove the existing boiler (the other boiler does not require replacement)
- Install one 80kW Hoval TopGas Condensing Boiler, including its flue system and pipework
- Install a flue system in compliance with the Safe Air Act and gas regulations
- Provide an emergency gas shut-off switch at the entrance of the plant room
- Add cladded thermal insulation to all pipework
IN THE END
The old boiler has been replaced with a new, more energy-efficient Hoval boiler. The Chester Military Museum is now equipped with reliable heating in preparation for Autumn/Winter.
Our team ensured the site was restored post-installation, including bricking up areas where old pipework and flues were removed to guarantee adequate fire stopping.

OUR CLIENT
St Luke’s Church is a parish of the Church of England situated in the picturesque village of Silverdale, Newcastle-under-Lyme. It serves as a vital hub for the local community, facilitating a diverse array of ceremonies and services for the residents of Silverdale and the neighbouring areas. Additionally, the church maintains a strong connection with St Luke’s Primary School, acting as its designated place of worship.
THE BRIEFING
Our team of expert engineers was commissioned to replace two damaged boilers and their corresponding pumps to enhance the heating efficiency of the church. This project involved the complete removal of the existing system and the installation of two new boilers, alongside upgraded pipework and pumps, in order to achieve improved heat distribution and greater comfort for the church community.
IN THE END
The project commenced with the safe disconnection and removal of two damaged Worcester heating boilers. Our engineers meticulously isolated and drained the existing heating pipework and removed the outdated circulation pumps in preparation for the new installation.
Our team then supplied and installed two new Worcester Greenstar 8000 Style 50kW heating boilers, complete with Worcester flue systems. The existing pipework was carefully modified to ensure seamless integration with the new boilers, resulting in an efficient system upgrade.
As part of the installation process, we fitted two new Grundfos 15-50 130 boiler shunt pumps as well as a Grundfos Magna1 40-120F heating pump to optimise circulation and enhance overall system performance.
Thorough commissioning and testing were conducted to guarantee full system functionality and performance prior to handover.
The upgraded heating system now offers a considerably warmer and more comfortable environment for visitors and church services, while improving energy efficiency and assisting the church in reducing ongoing heating costs.

We were tasked with being on-site at De Ferrers Academy to replace two boilers at the Trent Campus. The existing Hamworthy fleet boilers were carefully isolated, drained, and removed. The existing generator at HMP Lincoln was nearing the end of its operational life, and further maintenance would not be cost-effective. A new generator would not only provide a more financially viable solution but also address environmental concerns. Additionally, the facility required a replacement 80,000 litre fuel tank due to significant corrosion that was contaminating the fuel. The project's scope included the following:
- Installation of temporary power generation and fuel systems
- Decommissioning and removal of the outdated generator
- Installation and commissioning of a new 80,000 litre fuel tank, including:
- New double-skin PLX pipework with an integrated leak detection system
- Fuel polishing capabilities

At RAF Shawbury, various helicopter components can undergo spray painting or coating processes. This includes parts such as helicopter panels, fuselage sections, rotor blades, tail sections, and other elements needing surface finishing or protective coatings as part of maintenance or refurbishment procedures.
They required an additional spray paint mixing room, which was to be established in a space previously used as a hangar. We collaborated with Spraybake Ltd on this project for the installation of the unit, during which we provided the following mechanical and electrical services:
- Removal of the drench shower base and repair of the floor
- Strip out of existing equipment
- Compressed air and breathing air installations
- Mechanical supply and extraction ventilation for the spray booth, including an external exhaust stack

Case Studies: The Light Cinema, Sittingbourne
THE NEW CINEMA:
The Light Cinema Group operates a growing network of cinemas, bowling alleys, and dining venues across the UK, with Sittingbourne being the latest completed site.
Just a short stroll from Sittingbourne train station and surrounded by a variety of restaurants, bars, and shops, the Light Cinema was ready for an MEP fit-out ahead of its opening in May 2021.
As the focal point of the newly developed Bourne Plaza, this complex features an eight-screen cinema, a nine-lane bowling alley, a retro-style arcade, a diner, and three bars, making it the ideal destination for an enjoyable outing with friends and family!
The eight cinema screens collectively offer 675 seats, with Screen One accommodating 175 guests, and the smaller “studio” style screen seating 35. There are three types of seating available: standard, full-length loungers, and luxurious electric recliners. No matter which screen you choose, customers can expect a comfortable seating experience!
THE BRIEFING:
Commencing in January 2020, Ford Mainwaring had the privilege of being involved early in the project, allowing for detailed discussions about client needs and expectations to create the ideal environment for cinema-goers.

Ford Mainwaring was commissioned by John Taylor Multi-Academy Trust to carry out the complete removal and installation of heating and pipework at their Chase Terrace Academy, located in Burntwood.
THE BRIEFING
The scope of work undertaken by Ford Mainwaring encompassed several buildings across the campus:
Heating & Air Source Heat Pump Works:
- Decommission and dismantle the entire site heating system, including all plant equipment.
- Supply and install a Daikin Screw Type 320kW air source heat pump, along with electrical distribution and sub-main works.
- Install new Remeha Quinta condensing boilers to complete a hybrid system, equipped with a 4000-litre buffer vessel.
- Install Grundfos heating pumps throughout all zones and circuits across the site.
- New heating distribution pipework installed site-wide, divided into multiple zones.
- Installation of new heating emitters, including radiant panels and traditional radiators.
- Implement new heat pump air conditioning systems within the theatre to provide comfort cooling and heating tailored to daily usage needs.
Swimming Pool Efficiency:
- Install a new Air Handling Unit with full heat recovery, including internal and external ductwork systems.
- Create new supply and extract ductwork for changing rooms, utilising free heating from the recovered air in the pool area.
- Remove the existing inefficient electric heating system in the pool area.
- Install a new free-standing column-mounted pool cover system, complete with remote control, floatation boom, tow ropes, and spool tapes.
- Implement a new temperature and humidity control system linked to the Building Management System (BMS).
LED Lighting:
- Replace the entire site-wide lighting installation with new LED ceiling panels, battens, and external fittings.
- Install new switchgear and Extra-Low Voltage (ELV) systems where necessary.
- All design and coordination were carried out by the FM team.
BMS Controls:
- In partnership with Demma Group, we undertook the comprehensive replacement of the BMS control system for the entire site, covering Air Source Heating, air conditioning systems, hot water, underfloor heating, pumps, and heat recovery systems.
- The system upgrades included new wiring, control panels, instrumentation, outstations, and commissioning.
All areas included thorough testing and quality assurance checks of systems to ensure optimal functionality and longevity.
IN THE END
Throughout the 12 months on-site, the project leaders and engineers from Ford Mainwaring were respectful of their environment and diligently worked to minimise disruption to the Academy's operations.
The installation of the Daikin air source heat pump offers energy-efficient heating, leading to significant savings on energy bills compared to traditional heating systems, while also contributing to reduced carbon emissions.
