Galvanized swan creation nets £5,500 for disabled school

28 March 2017

A school for young people with disabilities received a £5,500 donation thanks to a blacksmith project completed by an Essex galvanizing company.

South East Galvanizers, part of Wedge Group Galvanizing, stepped in to finish a two-metre swan sculpture created by the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths – one of the oldest City of London livery companies.

The swan was made by members of the company for the Lord Mayor’s Show in the City of London, and they turned to the team at South East Galvanizers who offered its services free so the final piece could be auctioned off for Treloar’s in Alton, Hampshire, which provides education for disabled youngsters from nursery to college age.

Commercial Manager Neil Pearson from South East Galvanizers said: “When we received the request from the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths and heard about the hard work which had gone into creating the swan, we were of course more than happy to complete the sculpture for them free of charge.

“The finished swan looked incredible and we were delighted to hear it raised £5,500 for the school, which we’re sure will make a huge difference to the students there.”

Steve Miller, who approached the plant on behalf of the blacksmiths, added: “The swan was made in individual parts by award-winning blacksmiths around the country to our design and under our supervision.

“Participants included several champion blacksmiths, other award holders and students to reflect the work that the livery company does to promote the future of the trade. The theme of our presence at the show was blacksmiths supporting education and we had some students walking in the parade.

“The blacksmiths have strong links with the school, all of the blacksmiths gave their time for free, the material was donated and Kingston Maurwood College in Dorset gave us use of their facilities for a weekend to partly assemble the swan.”

He added that a swan was chosen because one features on the company’s crest to represent the grace of their work, and because the Lord Mayor, Dr Andrew Parmley, was a swan warden of the Worshipful Company of Vintners as well as being a member of their company.
