Sarsen Technology Joins P4 Consortium

14 November 2018

P4 is an open-source, permissively licensed language which is maintained by a non-profit organisation called the P4 Language Consortium. Sarsen Technology is proud to be a member of the consortium, alongside P4 pioneers like Netcope Technologies, Cisco and Xilinx.

Sarsen Technology has joined the consortium as we have no doubt that P4 is one of the greatest innovations that has been developed for the networking industry in recent years. As part of the P4 consortium we actively support a number of goals:

• Build a thriving open source community dedicated to the use and improvement of the P4 language.
• Utilise P4 to describe how a forwarding plane should process packets.
• Promote standardisation and improvement of the P4 language
• Enable industry participants to develop new technologies that function in accordance with the specification.
• Benefit consumers and the industry by facilitating adoption of the P4 language. What is P4? P4 is a high-level language for programming protocol-independent packet processing. It provides the developer with a basic set of instruments to implement a network stack in switching hardware. It is completely agnostic to the underlying technology, e.g. ASIC, CPU or FPGA, so it provides a fully programmable data plane.

This enhanced programmability offers new opportunities for businesses, including flexibility when compared to traditional fixed-function switches, and upgrade capabilities that support improvements to functions and protocols on network devices by updating the P4 software running on them, instead of purchasing new hardware.
