Ultrascape helps seal market towns future

22 December 2011

Ultrascape’s Seal & Stop has been used to help improve the look of The Malls shopping centre in Basingstoke, Hampshire.

The Malls has been given a major facelift with Basingstoke and Deane borough council investing £5 million in refurbishment works to create a modern open-air shopping centre with attractive outdoor areas. The improvements included allowing natural lighting to more than compliment their newly sealed paved precinct.

The council collaborated with landscape architects HED (Hyland Edgar Driver) to re-design the area. HED wanted to ensure the longevity of the scheme by using a sand stabiliser that would not alter the appearance of the block paving. As a result, Ultrascape’s solvent free paving sealer, Seal & Stop, was specified for use by the main contractor Blakedown, on the 3,500m² of granite setts and slabs that were laid in the shopping centre’s internal courtyard and throughout its two main thoroughfares.

Seal & Stop is an easy to apply water-based sealant and weed preventative for use on block paving, which also stops jointing sand from being washed away. Unlike conventional solvent based products, it does not stain or discolour the treated area and is easily applied to paving using a watering can or alternatively, using a roller and tray. It soaks into the surface to provide a protective seal and also binds the jointing sand together.

The new look for The Malls was unveiled in November and is now a more fitting welcome to Basingstoke town centre, whilst the improved shopping facilities are already attracting new lettings.
